SaaS Funnel Analytics: How to Find Where Users Drop Off
A funnel should do more than show one completion rate. Use ordered events, step conversion and source or device context to find the step that actually changed.
An overall conversion rate tells you that the outcome changed. A funnel tells you where the path changed. That difference matters because acquisition problems, signup friction and payment failures require completely different fixes.
Choose steps that represent progress
A useful SaaS funnel is built from meaningful progress events, not every click. A simple marketing-to-revenue funnel might be pricing_viewed → signup_started → signup_completed → checkout_started → purchase.
Count sessions in order
For a standard ordered funnel, a session should count at step two only if it reached step one first. Repeated events should not inflate the count. This makes step conversion and drop-off interpretable.
Find the largest deterioration, not only the largest absolute drop
The biggest funnel always loses many people near the top because the volume is larger. What matters operationally is often which step conversion changed versus the previous period or versus a healthier segment.
Segment after locating the weak step
Once a step is weak, compare it by source, campaign, device or landing page. If mobile users drop at checkout while desktop does not, the likely investigation is different from a drop concentrated in one acquisition campaign.
Connect funnel completion to revenue
A funnel is stronger when the final outcome carries revenue. Then the team can distinguish a step that loses many low-value sessions from a step that destroys high-value conversions.
Why Pulse uses an instant Funnel Lab
Pulse can calculate an ordered funnel from existing events without requiring a saved funnel object first. The goal is to let a founder test a hypothesis immediately, then use the Decision Feed to keep watching the material changes.

Frequently asked questions
How many steps should a SaaS funnel have?
Start with three to five meaningful progress events. Longer journeys are often easier to understand when split into acquisition, activation and monetization funnels.
What is funnel drop-off rate?
It is the percentage of users or sessions that reached one funnel step but did not reach the next required step.
